3:GKR:cbj 5750 6 Oct 1967 PART II NARRATIVE SUMMARY (S) 1. Throughout thet reporting period subordinate units of this command were assigned missions as follows: Company A, Direct Support of 1st Marines Company B, Direct Support of 5th Marines Company C, Direct Support of 7th Marines 2. 1-30 September 1967. The Civic Action Program for the month of September included the medical treatment of 314 people in Yen Bac and Cam Hoa Hamlets (AT985708) and (AT975703). Tin is being procured for the roof of the old Yen Bac school house. When completed, it will be used as the hamlet meeting hall. Seven chicken coops are in the final stages of construction in Yen Bac Hamlet and will be completed in thet coming month. Also plans have been made to purchase chickens for Yen Bac Hamlet. Eight large boxes of clothing were distributed in Yen Bac for use during the winter months and 250 gift packs were distributed to the children of Cam Hoa and Yen Bac Hamlets in connect- ion with National Youth Day. (U) 1-30 September 1967. The Battalion continued its mission of support- ing the Southern Sector Rear Area Defense by running both day and night patrols in the assigned SOR. (U) 1-30 September 1967. During the month of August the standdown on the Ontos mounted 106mm Recoilless Rifle was still in effect. The Ontos mounted 106mm Recoilless Rifle was fired on training ranges for the purpose of maintaining combat gunnery skills and safety procedures. Also, Ontos were again employed as convoy escorts for Rough Riders between the Danang Area and Hill 63. (S) 1-30 September 1967. The Battalion continued to provide Ontos for escort missions, mechanized patrols and the defense of fixed bases. 1-30 September 1967. The Battalion fired a total of 0 rounds 106mm in combat, 81 rounds of 106mm in practice range firing, 12,586 rounds of .50 caliber, and 2250 rounds of .30 caliber. 3:GKR:cjb 5750 6 Oct 1967 PART III SEQUENTIAL LISTING OF SIGNIFICANT EVENTES (U) 2 September Company C. C-33 and C-34 fired approximately 600 .30 caliber rounds from AT218552 into an estimated VC platoon located at AT218558. Area was searched at first light with negative results. 4 September Company A. At BT035628, A-21, A-22, A-23, and A-24 were called to support infantry after 7th Engineer's PC hit an enemy land mine. Infantry received approx- imately 100 rounds of small arms fire from BT035640. Ontos expended approximately 900 .30 caliber rounds. A search was made with negative results. 6 September Company B. A 10 man security patrol received approx- imately 5 rounds small arms fire from sniper located at BT123452. Approximately 30 rounds small arms fire and 3 M79 rounds were returned. A search was made and Anti-U.S. documents were found at BT128445. The documents were forwarded to 5th Marines CP. 7 September Company B. The 3rd platoon fire 1600 .50 caliber rounds for 1st Battalion/5th Marines as H&I fire into BT978355. 8 September Company A. At BT100518, A-35 hit an enemy land mine estimated at 60 pounds. The vehicle was completely destroyed and was towed to the 3rd platoon CP by tanks. The action resulted in 2 USMC WIA Med-Evacs. Company B. B-34 and B-35 moved to BT219358 to support infantry. B-34 moved to BT218359 and expended approx- imately 300 .30 caliber rounds at unknown number of enemy in treeline at BT216358. B-35 moved to BT219358 and expended approximately 100 .30 caliber rounds at 2 fleeing VC. The areas were searched with negative results. 9 September Company B. Third platoon fired 2000 .50 caliber rounds for 1st Battalion, 5th Marines as H&I fire into BT978355 and BT008318. 10 September Company A. At BT098584, A-32 and A-33 receivd heavy sniper fire. A-32 expended approximately 30 .30 caliber rounds and A-33 expended approximately 50 .30 caliber rounds. 3:GKR:cjb 5750 6 Oct 1967 11 September Company B. Two ontos departed ferry at BT091552 as convoy escort. Received 20-30 rounds small arms fire from snipers in treeline at BT118493. Returned 75 .30 caliber rounds. Convoy did not stop. 14 September Company B. Third platoon fired 3200 .50 caliber rounds for 1st Battalion, 5th Marines as H&I fire into BT023342 and BT005320. 15 September Company B. Two ontos departed CP as convoy escort to ferry located at BT091552. Received approximately 20 small arms rounds from snipers in treeline. Returned 100 rounds small arms fire. Convoy did not stop. 17 September Company A. At BT078562, A-21 struck an enemy land mine estimated at 40 pounds. The vehicle was com- pletely destroyed and was towed to the Battalion CP. The action resulted in 3 USMC WIA non-evac. 18 September Company B. Area around CP received approximately 35 rounds 82mm mortars. Four rounds landed in the company CP resulting in light damage to three tents and one USMC WIA non-evac. 20 September Company A. At BT184587, A-32 received approximately 25 rounds from snipers in treeline. A-32 expended approximately 100 .30 caliber rounds. No search was held due to mission. 22 September Company A. At BT181587, A-32 received 50-60 small arms rounds from snipers in treeline at BT183583. A-32 expended approximately 250 .30 caliber rounds. The action resulted in 2 VC KIA probable. 23 September Company C. C-32 while on patrol with Co. K, 2/7 received four sniper rounds from vicinity AT936606. C-32 returned approximately 150 .30 caliber rounds. A search was made with negative results. 27-28 September Company B. At BT097584, A-33 struck an enemy land mine estimated at 45 pounds. The mne was placed under a bridge and was command detonated prior to A-33 passing over it. A-33 received major damage to armament.
