PART II NARRATIVE SUMMRY (S)
1. Throughout the reporting period subordinate units of this command were assigned missions as follows:
Company A, Direct Support of 1st Marines
Company B, Direct Support of 5th Marines
Company C, Direct Support of 7th Marines
2. 1-31 August 1967. The Civic Action Program for the month of August included the treating of 373 people in Yen Bac and Cam Hoa Hamlets (AT985708) and (AT975703). The old Yen Bac School House is being con- verted into a Hamlet meeting hall, and a new school house was built with the help of four truck loads of dunnage lumber and 100 pounds of nails. Also, 7 chicken coops are in the final stages of construction in Yen Bac Hamlet and should be completed in the coming month. On 17 August a GVN Animal Husbandry Contact Team from Quang Nam Province Headquarters (Hoi An) gave the people of Yen Bac a lecture on raising chickens. The hamlet water pump was repaired several times and Yen Bac was given 200 gallons of gasoline to run the pump. Plans are underway for purchasing chickens, holding an Elders Festival and distributing winter clothing at Yen Bac Hamlet. (U)
1-31 August 1967. The Battalion continued its mission of supporting the Southern Sector Rear Area Defense by running both day and night patrols and operations in the assigned SOR. The additional commitments of providing a rifle squad to help patrol the western flank of the Southern Sector and increasing patrol activities prior to the National Election were also accomplished. 1-31 August 1967. During this time there was evidence of increased enemy activity in the Battalion SOR. On the morning of 29 August the Battalion Command Post was attacked by small arms and mortar fire in conjunction with the attack on the Song Cau Do Bridge (AT997707). (U)
1-31 August 1967. During the month of August the standdown on the Ontos mounted 106mm Recoilless Rifle was still in effect. However, permission was granted to fire the vehicle moutned 106mm Recoilless Rifle on training ranges for the purpose of maintaining combat gunnery skills and safety procedures. Also, Ontos were again employed as convoy escorts for Rough Riders. (S)
1-31 August 1967. The Battalion fired a total of 7 rounds 106mm in com- bat, 171 rounds of 106mm in practice range firing, 745 rounds of .50 caliber, and 7,595 rounds of .30 caliber. During the month the Battalion's Ontos traveled 4,924 miles. (U)
