3:GKR:jmt 5750 9 August 1967 PART II NARRATIVE SUMMARY (S) 1. Throughout the reporting period subordinate units of this command were assigned missions as follows: Company A, Direct Support of 1st Marines. Company B, Direct Support of 2nd Marines. Company C, Direct Support of 7th Marines. (U) 2. 1-31 July 1967. The Civic Action Program for the month of July inclu- ded the treating of 581 people in Yen Bac and Cam Hoa Hamlets (AT985708 and AT975703). An outdoor movie theatre was built for Yen Bac and 350 people from that hamlet viewed Psyops films during the reporting period. The hamlet water pump was repaired several times, and Yen Bac was given 200 gallons of gas to run the pump. Also 300 pounds of rice were given to Yen Bac Hamlet to help hold them over till the September harvest. A chicken farm is bein set up, and plans are under way to builda new water pump, hold an Elder's Festival and distribute winter clothing at Yen Bac Hamlet. (U) 1-31 July 1967. The Battalion continued its mission of supporting the Southern Sector Rear Area Defense by running both day and night patrols and Operations in the assigned SOR. The additional commitment of providing a rifle squad to patrol the Western flank of the Southern Sector was also accomplished. (U) 1-31 July 1967. The Ontos mounted 106mm RR standdown was still in effect during the month of July. A total of 15 Ontos have had .50 caliber machine guns mounted (two per vehicle), and these have proven to be effective. (S) 1-31 July 1967. During the monthof July the Battalion fired a total of 3 106mm rounds, 2,425 rounds .50 caliber, 2,490 .30 caliber rounds. The Battalion Ontos traveled a total of 3,182 miles. 3:GKR:jmt 5750 9 August 1967 PART III SEQUENTIAL LISTING OF SIGNIFICANT EVENTS (U) 7 July Ontos A-34 of Company A struck a land mine estimated 30 pounds TNT at coordinates BT117628, resulting in 3 USMC WIA Non-medevac. Right suspension system was destroyed and the Ontos was evacuated two weeks later. All 3 WIA's returned to duty after first aid. 8 July Two Ontos from 3rd Platoon, Company B, with a reinforced platoon from Company K, 5th Marines, left at 0600H as a reaction force to assist platoon under attack at coordinates BT219358. Vehicles fire 400 rounds .30 caliber at fleeing VC in treeline. Area was swept by Company K; Results, Unknown. 12 July 3rd Platoon, Company C, with light section from 2nd Platoon, Company C, began Direct Support of 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines. on Operation GEM. At 1700H Ontos C-34 at coordinates AT862563 spotted two VC running into a house. Fired 25 rounds of .50 caliber machine gun which were on target. Area not searched due to water barrier. Results: 2 VC KIA Probable. 14 July At 1130H Ontos C-34 in support of Operation GEM at coordinates AT863566 picked up 15 male and 2 female refugees-Ages 10-50; two (2) turned over to 3/7. Results: 2 VC Suspect. 15 July Operation GEM secured. 16 July Two Ontos from 1st Platoon, Company B on a search and destroy mission with 2nd Platoon, Company L, 5th Marines, we engaged in a two sided ambush by an unknown number of VC firing auto- matic weapons at coordiates BT112468. Ontos expended 300 rounds .30 caliber and, on order from infantry Platoon Comm- ander, fired two round HEPT 106mm, and one round 106mm FLECHETTE. Firing ceased. Area was searched with unknown results. 17 July At 1400H 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines on Hill 10 (coordinates AT923693) spotted VC Battalion at coordinates AT900710. The 3rd Platoon, Company C moved 4 Ontos to Hill 10. No contact was made. 19 July At 2310H Ontos C-35 located at coordinates AT92???? spotted 10 VC at coordinates AT932712 and fired 23 rounds ???????? 4 [MARKED OUT] _____________________________________________________________________ |
3:GKR:jmt 5750 9 August 1967 The following morning a patrol from 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines found several blood trails and drag marks. Results: VC KIA Probable. 21 July At 0800H, Lieutenant Colonel P. D. REISSNER, JR. assumed command of the Battalion, releiving Major P. S. GALLIGAN who became Executive Officer. 25 July Ontos A-12, 1st Platoon, Company A, at coordinates BT055675, passsed over an enemy box type land mine, pressure detonated with 25 pounds TNT, which detonated after the vehicle passed over it. Results: Minor damage to the vehicle and 2 USMC WIA Non-medevacs. Both WIA's returned to duty after receiving first aid. 29 July Ontos C-12 medevaced 3 USMC WIA's from 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, from coordinates AT948583 to BAS Hill 55 (Coordinates AT968622). 29 July Ontos A-13, 1st Platoon, Company A, while located at coordinates BT069677 received 300 rounds automatic weapons fire from 15 VC at coordinates BT069678. A-13 returned 200 rounds .30 caliber. Search of area was made, and blood trails were found.
