PART II NARRATIVE SUMMARY
1. Throughout the reporting period, subordinate units of this Command were assigned missions as follows:

Third Platoon, OPCON Third Batalion, Seventh Marines
Company C (Rein) OPCON Seventh Marines
2. 1 -23 March 1967. The Civil Affairs Program for the month of March in KHANH SON HAMLET, HOA KHANH VILLAGE, HOA VAN DISTRICT, QUANG NAM PROVINCE consisted of treating 211 Vietnamese people in our MEDCAP Program. The following material was delivered to the Hamlet Chief for the construction of a Hamlet Headquarters Building:
Three (3) truck loads of sand Two (2) truck loads of rock Lumber of all sizes Twenty (20) pieces of rod (reinforcing)
23 March 1967. This Battalion moved its Command Post from AT 958757 in the Northern Sector Rear Area Defense to AT 989708 in the Southern Sector Rear Area Defense.
1- 23 March 1967. The Battalion continued its role of supporting the Zone B Northern Sector Defense by continuous active security patrolling.
23 - 31 March 1967. This Battalion entered Southern Sector Rear Area Defense and initiated aggressive patrolling of the assigned area of re- sponsibility and reorganized the existing perimeter defenses.
1 - 31 March 1967. During the month of March, there was an increase in the employment of Ontos in Search and Destroy Operations, Mechanized Patrolling, Convoy Escort and security of Engineer Sweep Teams. See Companies A, B and C Command Chronologies.

Thrd Platoon, Company A fired 2 106mm rounds in direct support 1/1 from BT 119634 to BT 117635.
2 March First Platoon, Company A fire 10 106mm round in direct support 3/1 from BT 055676 to BT 054667. 1 VC WIA probable.
5 March At 1030, Lance Corporal J. M. DONOVAN First Platoon Company C at BT 324181 had an accidental discharge while cleaning his M3A15 Sub-Machine Gun which resulted in his death.
6 March Second Platoon, Company A fired 2 106mm rounds in direct support 1/26 from AT 996633 to AT 996627. Enemy fire ceased.
9 March 091030H Light Section Third Platoon, Company C at BS 536925 was dispatched with one infantry squad to reinforce fire team at BS 536925. Spotted approximately 10 VC in house at BS 568928. Fired 1 106mm round at house. Search of area revealed three blood trails and one chinese bolt action rifle. Three VC KIA probable.
11 March Second Platoon, Company B participated in a search and destroy mission from PHU LOC (6) at AT 926527 to LA THAP (1) at AT 945516. Ontos B-22 hit an anti-personnel mine at AI BAN (3) at AT 947526. No injuries to personnel and light damage to vehicle.
11-13 March First Platoon, Company C in direct support of Company B 1/5 COUNTY FAIR in vicinity of BS 329?72 at BICH NGO VILLGE. Negative contact.
13 March At 1445H Light Section from First Platoon, Company B in direct support of Company A, 1/7 at BT 661031 received 15 to 20 rounds small arms automatic rifle fire from two snipers at BT 665034. Ontos fired 4 106mm rounds and 50 rounds .30 caliber ammunition. Fire ceased. Infantry searched area with inconclusive results.
15 March Second Platoon, Company A in direct support 2/1 set blocking position at AT 995635.

At 151000H infantry squad from Company A, 1/7, Platoon Commander and Three Ontos Commanders from First Platoon Company B at BS 635979 were making a trafficability study and reconnaissance in grid square BS 6379 whey they received heavy small arms fire from unknown number of VC at BS 643474 which resulted in 3 USMC WIA Medevac. Patrol returned 200 rounds 7.62 caliber ammunition. Reaction squad from H&S Company, 1/7 accompanied by Light Section Ontos sent to reinforce squad. VC broke contact. Later search of area revealed 1 pair black pajamas with several bullet holes. Results 1 VC KIA probable.
16 March Second Platoon, Company A in direct support 2/1 received enemy fire. Fired 16 106mm rounds from BT 003606 to BT 003609. Enemy fire ceased.
Third Platoon, Company A on patrol at BT 005565 sighted enemy movement at BT 005562. The Ontos fired 4 106mm rounds. A search of the area revealved two VC KIA confirmed.
17 March Third Platoon, Company A on patrol at AT 493579 received 20 rounds small arms fire from treeline at AT 996584. The Ontos fired 4 106mm rounds. Enemy fire ceased.
Heavy Section from First Platoon, Company C at BS 337170 supported platoon size ambush from CAC 115. Negative con- tact.
21 March Third Platoon, Company A on patrol fired 7 106mm rounds from BT 028577 to BT 023578 result unknown. No search was made.
At 1530H Heavy Section First Platoon, Company C is sup- port of a Platoon from CAC 115 occupied blocking position at BT 338165. The CAC Platoon came under fire the Ontos began deploying to better firing position when Ontos C-15 struck a 250 pound bomb rigged as a mine. The Ontos was totally destroyed. Two marines KIA and two WIA Medevac. At 1615 Ontos received heavy small arms automatic fire from an estimated Company of VC. Fired fire (5) 106mm rounds at two buildings at BT 348167 where five (5) VC were seen firing. Four VC KIA probable.
At 1621H Ontos again received small arms and automatic fire from BT 346162 from an undetermined number of VC. Ontos fire three (3) 106mm rounds and destroyed two buildings. Fire ceased. Two VC KIA probable.

At 1625H Ontos fired 300 rounds .30 caliber ammunition at VC moving across rice paddy at BT 346122. Observed two VC fall. Two VC KIA probable.
At 1650H Ontos fired fifty .30 caliber ammunition at VC in rice paddy at BT 345157. Observed the VC fall. Results 2 VC KIA confirmed.
At 1710 three VC were observed setting up what appeared to be a recoilless rifle behind a stone wall at BS 357153. Ontos fired four 106mm rounds and wall was completely de- destroyed. Ontos Commander surveyed the area through binoculars and could not observe VC or weapon. Three VC KIA probable.
23 March Third Platoon, Company A on patrol in direct support Company A, 1/1 at BT 005583 received ten rounds small arms fire from treeline at BT 005585. The Ontos fired 4 106mm rounds enemy firing ceased. Search was made with negative results.
Third Platoon, Company A on patrol in direct support Company A, 1/1 at BT 005584 received five rounds small arms fire from treeline at AT 994005. The Ontos fired 4 106mm rounds. Firing ceased. Search was made with negative results.
At 0715 Heavy Section Second Platoon, Company C departed on Rough Rider to Danang.
25 March Third Platoon, Company A on patrol in direct support of Second Platoon, Company A, 1/1 at BT 004578 received fifteen rounds small arms fire from treeline at AT 998575. Ontos fired 5 106mm rounds. Firing ceased. No search was made due to mission.
At 1630H Heavy Section Company C returned to their CP at BS 575422 from Operation PERRY.
27 March Second Platoon, Company A on patrol at BT 019620 received two hundred rounds semi-automatic fire from treeline at BT 034621. The Ontos fired 5 106mm rounds. Fire ceased. A search was made of the area with negative results.
Second Platoon, Company A on patrol at BT 014614 received 4 rounds small arms fire from a house at BT 020610. Ontos fired 1 106mm ammunition. Fire ceased a search was made of the area with negative results.

At 1830 a Light Section from First Platoon, Company B set up blocking position at BS 632989 in support of one squad from H&S Company, 1/7 and squad from Company A, 1/7 at BS 634989 after an M-35 had received two incoming enemy hand grenades. Infantry swept area in an attempt to locate VC with negative results.
28 March At 1310H Light Section, First Platoon, Company B at BS 635475 in support of infantry squad from Company A, 1/7 re- ceived 10 rounds small arms fire from BS 633974. Ontos returned three 106mm rounds. Fire ceased. Area swept with negative results.
31 March At 311500H a Heavy Section of Third Platoon, Company c departed this CP in support of 3/11 for Operation BOONE.

2. 1 - 31 March 1967. During the current reporting period, A Company DS First Marines is continuing to provide Ontos for escort missions, Mechan- ized Patrols, Convoy Escort, and support of Night Defensive positions. The terrain is excellent for Ontos opertion in the First Marine TAOR. The lack of Float Vehicles to replace those lost ot enemy mines continues to be a major problem. The shortage of firing pins for the 106mm Rifle is becoming a problem area. The company strength of 12 vehicles continues to cause a strain on the available Ontos. Future company operation will require augmentation of 4 - 5 Ontos.

PART II NARRATIVE SUMMARY
1. Throughout the report period, platoons of this company were assigned missions as follows:
1st Platoon - ADCON - OPCON to Task Force X-Ray
2nd Platoon - OPCON Second Battalion, Fifth Marines
3rd Platoon - Direct Support, Third Battalion Seventh Marines
2. On 11 March 1967 the second Platoon particapated in a search and destroy mission from Phu Loc (6) 926527 to La Thap (1) 945516. B-22 hit an anti- personnel mine at Ai Ban (3) 9465[?]26. No injuries and little damage to vehicle. The area south of the road by careful manuvering and the road to the north is ideal for tracked vehicles.
3. On 22-25 March 1967 the second Platoon participated in operation New Castle. The Ontos were assigned the mission of taking up positions on the banks of the Song Thu Bon river at 865490 and support Company F during the river crossing and be prepared to shift position southwest on order. No contact. Ontos were pulled back on 24 March 1967 to run convoys as the operation was beyond the aid of ontos.
3. Third Platoon continued in direct support (operation Desoto) third Battalion seventh Marines.

Narrative Summary
With paddies continuing to dry out during March the use of Ontos in- creased in support of Infantry, especially squad and platoon size combat patrols. Through these operations the infantry units are gaining a greater appreciation of the capabilities of the Ontos and the results of this coordination is providing excellent results. Despite some adverse operating conditions the Ontos is proving time and time again that it is mechanically reliable and well suited for this type operations.
Sequential Listings of Significant Events
1 Mar 1967. At 0800H 3rd Platoon "C" Company received three rounds sniper fire from (BT 554900). Returned fire with one 106mm and fifty 30 cal. machine gun rounds. Destroye one house. Five minutes later spotter plane noticed three VC at (BS 554900). Target marked by smoke. Ontos fired three 106mm at fleeing VC. Area searched with inconclusive results. At 0530H 1st Platoon "B" Company fired five 106mm H&I fire from (BT 324182) to (BT 18171).

8 Mar 1967. At 0130H and 0430H 1st Platoon "C" Company fired one 106mm H&I fire from (BT 3324181) to (BT 331175). At 072300H, 02315H and 072330H 1st Platoon "C" Company fired one 106mm H&I fire from (BT 324181) to (BT 331175).
9 Mar 1967. 091030H Light Section, 3rd Platoon "C" Company (BS 536925) was dispatched with one infantry squad to reinforce fire team at (BS 536925). 10 Mar 1967. At 092245H and 092330H, 1st Platoon "C" Company fired two 106mm H&I fire from (BT 321181) to (BT 313173). At 100100H, 100300H and 100530H 1st Platoon "C" Company fired three 106mm H&I fire from (BT 324181) to (BT 313173).
11 through 13 Mar 1967. 1st Platoon "C" Company in direct support of B 1/5 Country Fair in vicinity of (BS 329172) at Bich Ngo village. Neg- ative contact.

in support of A 1/7 (BT 661031) received 15 to 20 rounds of small arms automatic rifle fire from two snipers at (BT 665034). Ontos returned four 106mm at 50 rounds 30 cal. MG. Sniper fire ceased. Infantry searched area with inconclusive results.
At 0915 Light Section 1st Platoon "B" Company in support of A 1/7 fired two 106mm into mouth of cave at (BT 655013). Cave destroyed.
14 Mar 1967. At 132200H, 132215H, 132315H, 13240H and 140600H, 1st Platoon "C" Company fired five rounds 106mm H&I fire from (BT 324181) to (BT 313174).
15 Mar 1967. At 151000H infantry squad from A 1/7, Platoon Commander and three Ontos Commanders from 1st Platoon "B" Company (BS 635979) were making a trafficability study and reconnaissance in grid square (BS 6397) when they received heavy small arms fire from unknown number of VC at (643974) which resulted in 3 USMC WIA MedEvac. Patrol returned 200 rounds 7.62 and 200 rounds 45 cal. SMG. Reaction squad from H&S 1/7 accompanied by Light Section Ontos sent to reinforce squad. VC broke contact. Later search of area revealed 1 pair of black pajamas with several bullet holes. Results 1 VC KIA probable.
16 Mar 1967. 1st Platoon "C" Company (BT 324181) fired six 106mm H&I fire from (BT 324181) to (BT 321169) at 152200H, 152230H, 152245H, 152300H, 160200H and 160300H.
17 Mar 1967. Heavy Section 1st Platoon "C" Company (BS 337170) supported platoon sized ambush from CAC 1/5. Negative contact.
18 Mar 1967. 1st Platoon "C" Company fired five rounds 106mm H&I fire from (BT 324181) to (BT 321113) at 172200H, 172300H, 172359H, 180100H and 180600H.
19 Mar 1967. 1st Platoon "B" Company occupied blocking position at (BS 638798) from 180845H to 181900H in support of a platoon from D 1/7. Negative contact.
At 0800H, 3rd Platoon "C" Company escorted squad sized combat patrol from H 2/7. Returned to H 2/7 Combat Base at 1400. Negative contact. At 1440H Heavy Section 1st Platoon "B" Company (BS 640978) in support of squad reinforced combat patrol from D 1/7 fired nine 106mm at unknown number of VC who were movi through treeline at (BS 625978). Area searched with inconclusive results. At 1515H Heavy Section 1st Platoon "B" Company (BS 640978) in support of squad sized combat patrol fro D 1/7 fired three 106mm at (BS 626979) at unknown number of VC who were firing small arms at patrol. Sniper fire ceased. Infantry searched area with inconclusive results.
20 Mar 1967. At 1100H Light Section 1st Platoon "B" Company occupied blocking position at (BS 638978) in support of squad sized combat patrol

from D 1/7. Returned to Combat Base at 1700H. Negative contact.
21 Mar 1967. 1st Platoon "C" Company fired five 106mm H&I fire from (BT 324182) to (BT 312174) at 192200H, 192300H, 192330H, 200100H and 200200H. At 1530H, Heavy Section 1st Platoon "C" Company in support of a platoon from CAC 1/5 occupied blocking position at (BT 338165) when the CAC platoon came under fire. The Ontos began deploying to better firing position when Ontos C15 struck a 250 lb bombe rigged as a mine and was destroyed. Two Marine KIA's and two WIA resulted. The WIA's were medevaced at 1550H. At 1615, Ontos received heavy small arms automatic fire from an estimated company of VC. Fired five 106mm at two buildings (BT 348167) where five VC were firing from resulting in four VC KIA probable.
At 1621H Ontos again received small arms and automatic fire from (BT 346162) from an undetermined number of VC. Ontos fire three 106mm and destroyed two buildings. Sniper fire ceased. Two VC KIA probable.
At 1625 Ontos fired 300 rounds 30 cal. MG at VC moving across rice paddy at (BT 346122), observed two VC fall. Two VC KIA probable.
At 1650 Ontos fired fifty 30 cal. MG rounds at VC in rice paddy (BT 345157). Observed all the VC fall. Results 2 VC KIA confirmed.
At 1710 Three VC were observed setting up what appeared to be a recoilless rifle behind a stone wall at (BS 357153). Ontos fired four 106mm rounds and wall was completely destroyed. Ontos Commander sur- veyed the area through binoculars and could not observce VC or weapon. Results, three VC KIA probable.
Note This report was turned in to S-3 of 1/5. He stated that our enemy casualty figures would be changed to 9 VC KIA probable and 2 VC WIA probable.
22 Mar 1967. 1st Platoon "B" Company departed 1/7 CP in support of A and C Companies 1/7, sweep in 1/7 TAOR. Negative contact during first day of operation.
23 Mar 1967. 1st Platoon "B" Company still in support of A and C Com- panies 1/7. Negative contact.
24 Mar 1967. At 1200H 1st Platoon "B" Company returned from supporting A and C Companies 1/7. Negative contact.
At 0715 Heavy Section 2nd Platoon "C" Company departed on Roughrider to Danang.
At 0300 1st Platoon "C" Company fired four 106mm H&I fire from (BT 324181) to (BT 317177).

25 Mar 1967. At 0900 Heavy Section Company "C" departed their CP (BS 575922) in support of 2/7 on Operation Perry. Negative contact first day.
26 Mar 1967. At 1630 Heavy Section Company "C" returned to their CP (BS 575922) from Operation Perry. Negative contact.
1st Platoon "C" Company fired four 106mm H&I fire from (BT 325183) to (BT 317177) at 0100H and 0430H.
27 Mar 1967. At 1830H a Light Section from 1st Platoon "B" Company set up blocking position at (BS 634989) after an M-35 had received two incoming enemy hand grenades. Infantry swept area in an attempt to locate VC with inconclusive results.
28 Mar 1967. 1st Platoon "C" Company fired four 106mm H&I fire from (BT 325183) to (BT 313175) between the hours of 0100H and 0430H.
At 1310 Light Section 1st Platoon "B" Company (BS 635975) in support infantry squad from D 1/7 received 10 rounds small arms fire from (BS 633979). Ontos returned three 106mm and sniper fire ceased. In- fantry swept area for twenty minutes with negative results.
29 Mar 1967. 0910H Heavy Section, 1st Platoon "B" Company departed 1/7 CP in support of D1/7. Light Section 1st Platoon "B" Company departed 1/7 CP at 0910H in support of A 1/7.
30 Mar 1967. One vehicle from Heavy Section, 1st Platoon "B" Company was pulled back to remain in reserve leaving a Light Section to continue in support of D 1/7. Light Section formed a blocking position at (BS 653024). Light Section, 1st Platoon "B" Company continued in support of A 1/7 and formed a blocking position at (BS 638978).
At 2100H, 2230H, 2400H, and 0100H 1st Platoon "C" Company fire four (4) rounds 106mm fire as H&I from (BS 316174).
31 Mar 1967. At 211500H a Heavy Section of 3rd Platoon "C" Company departed this CP in support of 3/11 for Operation [Pueblo, marked out] [replaced with "Boone"].
1st Platoon "C" Compay fired five rounds 106mm as H&I fire between 302300H and 310400H from (BT 325183) to (BT 317167).
